The first Honda vehicles sold in the United States were motorcycles, the Japanese brand’s light little automobiles arrived just in time for the 1970s oil crisis, and the company achieved dominant performance in the Formula One racing circuit in the 1980s. To this day, although the Japanese brand has spread to nearly every U.S. automotive market segment — plus motorcycles and machinery ranging from snowblowers to outboard motors — most Honda cars reflect this heritage of driving enjoyment and fuel efficiency.

Take the Honda CR-V compact crossover, the brand’s best-seller. Even though it’s one of the roomiest models in its class, it delivers an enjoyable driving experience and near best-in-class gas mileage. Honda’s other sales leaders — the Civic compact car and the Accord mid-size sedan — bring similar strengths to their segments. The Civic’s higher-performance Si and Type R grades dial up the vehicle’s already respectable power and handling. And you’ll even find unexpectedly eager driving behavior in some big Hondas like the Passport mid-size crossover, Odyssey minivan, and Ridgeline pickup. And for extra fuel efficiency, Honda sells the Civic-based Insight gas-electric hybrid sedan; hybrid versions of the Accord and CR-V; and the Cl,arity, a mid-size sedan available with all-electric, plug-in hybrid, and even fuel-cell powertrains.

Honda skips a few models that even its main Japanese rivals include in their lineups. There’s no full-size pickup, or even a truck-based mid-size model (the Ridgeline shares its front-wheel-drive-b,ased architecture with Honda cars and crossovers). There’s no truck-based SUV. There’s no rear-wheel drive vehicle at all (except the Acura NSX sports car in Honda’s luxury-brand counterpart), just front- and all-wheel drive. Honda instead argues that its vehicles have all the space, capability, and performance that most folks will actually need.

,Most Hondas start with a base LX model, followed by a dressed-up Sport model with flashier design elements and a few more features. The heart of the lineup is the well-equipped EX and its leather-trimmed EX-L counterpart, followed by the extra-luxurious Touring and Elite models.
